The fifth annual ‘Trashion Show’ will be happening in-person Saturday for the first time since 2019,
After a brief hiatus due to the pandemic, Birch and Lace will host the return of its annual ‘Trashion Show.’ The show was the brainchild of Sara Sansom, owner-operator of Birch and Lace. As a hair stylist and fervent environmentalist, Sansom wanted to start something that married her two passions—out of which came the ‘Trashion Show.’
“I think I had maybe seen something online…it’s definitely not a new concept. It’s happening all over,” said Sansom.
When she started Birch and Lace, Sansom had a waste diversion plan to limit the amount of waste that the business produced, and to maximize recycling. The show is separate from the plan, but Sansom saw it as an opportunity to bring the enthusiasm that she has for environmental responsibility to the community. It also gives the community a way to recognize Earth Day, which is recognized on April 22nd every year.
“It gets people’s creative juices going. It was really cool to throw that out there to the community and like people got so excited,” said Sansom of the first year.

The rules of the show are simple. Keep the outfits PG, and only use items bound for the landfill.
Sansom said she was especially grateful for the help that her colleague, Kate Borucz, has provided by taking lead on the show over the past few years.
The show often gets a good turnout from creators who submit their outfits. In the past, the Trashion Show had about 20 participants. This year, they’re expecting 18 unique outfits, all made from reused items.
The whole show is also a fundraiser. This year’s net proceeds are bound for the food bank, including money raised from a silent auction, a 50/50 draw, and money from admission.
Sansom gave a particular ‘thank you’ in advance of the show for two of their biggest sponsors this year. The Revelstoke Credit Union contributed by providing insurance for the event, and Revelstoke Tourism helped by contributing money for the event.
Ahead of the event, Sansom said she hopes tomorrow’s event builds on the accomplishments of previous years.
“I’ll be excited to hopefully see the interest of another successful year of it, and then kind of plan forward,” she said.
Although the show hasn’t happened yet, they’re already looking ahead to next year and ways they can expand the event. Getting approval for the street closure was a big step that Sansom said could open the show up to the possibility of even more growth next year.
The event will run throughout the day outside of Birch and Lace.
