Stranded hikers rescued in Glacier National Park

Parks Canada confirms three 'stranded' people rescued in the Uto Peak area above Illecillewaet Campground

Update, 11:26 a.m.

A Parks Canada spokesperson confirmed the trip were picked up by helicopter this morning and were being taken to the awaiting ambulance. Some of the people in the party were displaying signs of hypothermia, but were otherwise OK.

Original story:

A search and rescue operation is underway near Uto Peak in Glacier National Park.

Three people, some of whom are Revelstoke residents, left from the Illecillewaet Campground for a hike on Sunday, July 7, but failed to return to their vehicle that evening.

The group is said to be a 52-year-old man and his two daughters, both aged around 30 years old. At least one of the three is believed to be a Revelstoke resident, RCMP said.

Cpl. Thomas Blakney of the Revelstoke RCMP said the group somehow got lost on their hike. They contacted authorities on Monday, July 8 by dialling 9-1-1.

Blakney said the group reported they are “stranded in a remote area where they can’t get down.” They are reported to be cold, but not injured. Blakney said a positive outcome appears likely at this point.

Parks Canada searchers have launched a rescue. A Parks Canada spokesperson said that paramedics are waiting at the Illecillewaet Campground. A helicopter has been called in to assist with the rescue.

Uto Peak is located near Sir Donald, the iconic Glacier National Park peak. Several hiking trails lead from the Illecillewaet Campground into the alpine in the area.
