Environment Canada issued a winter snowfall warning for the Revelstoke area, saying up to 40 centimetres of snow could fall by the end of Thursday.
"An intense Pacific warm front will bring heavy snow to most of the Columbia and Kootenay districts tonight through Thursday. Total snowfall accumulations of 30 to 40 centimetres are expected," states the Environment Canada warning, which was issued Wednesday morning.
According to the forecast, snow is expected to begin falling this afternoon and should intensify overnight.
15 centimetres is expected Wednesday night and another 15 centimetres is forecast during the day on Thursday.
Revelstoke Mountain Resort is calling for 13 centimetres overnight, 20 on Thursday and another nine on Friday, with freezing levels rising to 1,400 metres during that time.
The warning is accompanied by an alert for people driving the Trans-Canada Highway.
"Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve," Environment Canada states. "Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
