Biking enthusiasts in Nakusp and surrounding areas have been enjoying the vast trail system on Mount Abriel.

Locals and those travelling from areas such as Revelstoke, have been hitting the trails after crew members from the Nakusp Bike Society (NABS) were busy getting the area in shape for the spring and summer season on April, 2.

After receiving grants from the Columbia Basin Trust, the Government of British Columbia, and Cycling Canada, more green trails have been added which is good news for those just getting into mountain biking.

President of NABS, Keara Shepherd first became hooked on mountain biking last year after being introduced to the sport by friends and realized that the biking community is incredibly welcoming.

“Everyone was so welcoming and nice,” said Shepherd.

Since becoming president, Shepherd has also started a group called, Babriels which aims to get more women hitting the trails. Shepherd said that when it comes to riding the mountains, it doesn’t have to be intimidating.

“You can ride lake trails at Abriel…and progress and do more and more,” said Shepherd.

NABS is also excited to be hosting the upcoming race, The Fresh Maker which will be held on Sunday, April, 28. For more information, you can visit their website and Facebook group.

Those wishing to enjoy the trails are encouraged to donate to the NABS, or purchase a membership.
