Revelstoke students will soon be able to apply for financial assistance in post-secondary applied sciences programs thanks to a legacy gift from a local couple.

The Revelstoke Community Foundation has established a new annual second-year scholarship, supported by Jim and Lynette Shepherd.

The Applied Sciences 2nd Year Scholarship will provide an annual $5,000 scholarship for Revelstoke Secondary School graduates pursuing a degree in applied sciences.

“I am incredibly grateful to Jim and Lynette for their support,” said Tracy Spannier, chair of the Revelstoke Community Foundation in a press release. “The financial concerns of Post-secondary can be overwhelming and can delay talented students looking to further their education. This vision to help Revelstoke students will allow more young people to pursue these essential careers.”

The Shepherds arrived in Revelstoke in 2012. The two volunteer in the community and continue to look for ways to give back and make a difference.

“Our hope is that for those individuals who receive the scholarship, they continue to move forward in a successful career of applied science,” said Jim Shepherd.

The first scholarship will be announced in June 2023, with priority being given to students entering their second year of study.

Applications will open from May 1 to 31. Potential applicants may request an application by emailing info@revelstokecommunityfoundation.com or visiting the Revelstoke Community Foundation website.
