Last week was Victims and Survivors of Crime Week which raises awareness about the issues facing victims and survivors of crime and about the services, assistance, and laws in place to help victims, survivors, and their families.

In support of this week, the Revelstoke Women’s Shelter would like to remind community members of a few supports for victims and survivors of crime.

The Revelstoke RCMP has hired a new Police Based Victim Services Worker who is knowledgeable and experienced in providing practical support, emotional support, referrals and information to victims, witnesses, and family members who have experienced or have been affected by a crime or traumatic event. This includes on-scene support, follow-up, and legal system navigation support, including court preparation and accompaniment. Additionally, they can assist with protection orders, legal aid referrals, crime-related financial benefits applications, restitution applications, and victim impact statements.

The Revelstoke Women’s Shelter is a Transition House offering safe and supportive accommodation for women and their children who are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing domestic violence. Our Moving Forward Outreach program offers a myriad of services to women and children in the transition house and community members. We offer 10 free counselling sessions to any community member in need from children to seniors. We have currently welcomed a new counsellor to our team, bringing us to two clinical counsellors and one art therapist. Additionally, we partner with Rise Women’s Legal Services out of Vancouver to provide women with legal support related to the family law act. Finally, we offer activities and events for women and their children who have been affected by domestic violence or are at risk of it.

An extremely helpful hotline offering a broad range of information and support to victims province-wide is Victim Link BC: 1-800-563-0808. It is a toll-free confidential service operating 24 hours a day 365 days a year. We strongly recommend reaching out to them if you or someone you know is a victim of a crime and is seeking support.

Please feel free to contact the Revelstoke Women’s Shelter if you or someone you know requires support or has questions about any of our services. If we are not the most appropriate service for your need we will assist you in finding the right support.

The Revelstoke Women’s Shelter would like to thank its funders, BC Housing, Civil Forfeiture, Columbia Basin Trust, City of Revelstoke, Revelstoke Credit Union, Revelstoke Community Foundation, Women’s Shelters Canada and community members. Without you, our work is not possible!
